Corporate Wellness

0.9 million workers were affected by work-related stress, anxiety or depression last year. And the cost of poor mental health to employers has increased by 25% since 2019 (that’s £56 billion a year). Pretty scary stats, right?

But what can you do about it?
Firstly, as an employer you have to do something about it by law. Employers have a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work. But obviously it makes good business sense and of course moral sense to look after your colleagues.
Secondly, understand stress.
Stress is not good, stress is not bad. Stress affects people differently and sometimes the most resilient can be at most risk. However, by understanding stress, individuals and organisations can actually perform better.
Antifragile is the natural way of things – antifragile describes a system or organism that actually gets stronger from the random (disordered) stresses that are placed on it. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same whereas the antifragile get better.
Antifragile is the opposite of fragile and a step further than robustness and resilience. Fragile breaks easily, robust stays strong up until a point and is then overwhelmed – the scenario of a water dam being overwhelmed by a freak and unpredicted flood. This is also exactly what happens in many peoples’ bodies. The body robustly resists illness and injury until it is overwhelmed and disease sets in.
Solutions
Don’ts
Don’t treat mental health in isolation from physical health and vice versa – look for total health solutions for effective interventions.
Don’t focus on resilience over ‘anti-fragility’.
Don’t overcomplicate – this leads to more stress.
Do’s
Do engage the least healthy with very simple solutions for maximum return on investment.
Do use multiple channels form online seminars to face-to-face, on-site, off-site workshops.
Do create a wellness culture – evidence shows that by including and promoting a wellness culture, what results is enhanced employee recruitment and retention, lower absenteeism, greater productivity, decreased presenteeism and lower healthcare costs.
Do get outside and out of your comfort zone – health is outside and an outdoor environment different from the workplace promotes engagement and practical learning.
When it comes to their health and wellbeing, employees now expect more. Today’s employers must now, do more to manage these expectations. Contact us for a bespoke WildFit Surrey quote.
