Why is an obstacle course the best form of exercise?

The obstacle course includes all the areas of total body fitness, including strength, core stability, balance, power, speed, endurance, cardio and flexibility and posture.

Natural (or primal) movement patterns

The obstacles mimic the natural, primal or functional movement patterns that our bodies have evolved to do over 4 million years of evolution. They include running, walking, climbing, crawling, pushing, pulling, twisting, squatting, lunging and bending.

Total fitness

The obstacle course includes all the areas of total body fitness:

  • strength
  • core stability
  • balance
  • power
  • speed
  • endurance / cardio
  • flexibility /posture

Multi-generational fitness

There is no need to stand on the sidelines, as adults and children can play on the obstacles together, which is time efficient and great for family bonding. It’s a screen break and exercise for the whole family.

Resilience building

The obstacles, with their progressive difficulty gradings, help build resilience. Both adults and children can gain confidence, strength and balance enabling them to progress to more complex movement patterns and more difficult obstacles. It’s great to see a person as they do something
they thought they couldn’t at the start.

Group and individual challenges

There is plenty of space for large groups on the obstacle course which is great for team building challenges and games but each individual can still tailor the movement experience to their unique needs.

Fun fitness

The obstacles and instructor led games lend themselves playful movement which is great fun. We always have adults and children’s groups laughing for much of our sessions.

Fresh air and daylight

Indoors is always more polluted than outdoors and outdoor light, even on the darkest days is better than artificial light. And if you’re lucky lots of vitamin D from the sunshine.

Nature bathing

Connecting with nature and the elements challenges and invigorates the body and the soul. We have an epidemic of ’nature deficit disorder’ which is not good for physical or mental health. As well as being in beautiful countryside, many of the WildFit Surrey obstacles are made out of the natural surroundings such ditches, streams and trees.
